Child Therapy Sessions: What to expect
A typical therapy session will begin with the parents and child together, to discuss the reason for therapy and cover developmental history and background. If you need to speak to a therapist without your child present, they can wait in the waiting room so you can have some separate time with the psychologist. Alternatively, if your child has a complex background, you can always book an initial session with the psychologist before your child attends.
Once your child is comfortable, it is typical that they will work one to one with the psychologist, and a review will occur at the end of each session with the parents. This process depends on the child, the presenting problem and family situation. This process may differ depending on the child’s age and needs. Depending on the child’s age and needs, our psychologists are well trained using play therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and other interactive techniques to support and help children to heal, to learn and to reflect on their world around them.
With the parents’ permission, a psychologist may want to contact a school, preschool or other service provider about the child and their needs. Furthermore, upon request, a psychologist can also conduct school visits. No contact with outside agencies occurs without parents’ permission.
A therapy session is 30 to 50 minutes long and you can receive a rebate through Medicare if you have the correct referral.
