No Medicare claim & Private Health Insurance
If you do not wish to claim any rebate through Medicare, then you do not need a referral to see a psychologist. If you have private health insurance, you may be able to claim some or all of your session cost, depending on your provider and level of cover. You need to contact your provider to find out how much you can claim for psychological services.
Medicare Rebates for Therapy
To receive a rebate through Medicare for therapy, you must have a Mental Health Care Plan or a Primary Enhanced Care Plan from your GP or Paediatrician. The referral must state that your child is referred for psychological support under one of these care plans and a care plan has to be attached. Please ensure your GP or Paediatrician gives you a copy of the full care plan. You must bring this plan with you to the first appointment in order to receive the rebate.
Medicare Rebates for Autism Assessments
To receive a rebate through Medicare for an Autism Assessment, you must have a referral from your Paediatrician, which states your child is referred for an Autism Assessment under the Helping Children with Autism Package. This allows your child to receive 4 claimable assessment sessions under Medicare. You must bring this referral letter with you to your first appointment to receive the rebate.
